Essential Apple Podcast 105: The Shiny Objects Edition

Well this week was of course the Apple event… 3 new iPhones and a new Apple Watch. I think many of us were a touch disappointed that was “all” there was. Does this mean another event later for some iPads and/or Macs? Who knows? I am joined once again by Donny and we talk about what we made of it… and a few other stories. Meanwhile Hurricane Florence flooded parts of the US, a Category 5 Typhoon hammered the Philippines and is bearing down on Hong Kong and China…

Affinity Photo for iPad updated

The iPad App of the Year is now better than ever

When we launched Affinity Photo for iPad last year we broke new ground in being the first to bring a desktop-class professional photo editing tool to iPad. It’s been quite a ride for us so far – announcing the launch on-stage at WWDC, being named as Apple’s App of the Year, and just this week reaching a quarter of a million users worldwide!

As we’ve talked to our users, witnessed the incredible work they create and understood more about their workflows, it’s inspired us to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on a mobile device.

And today, we’re thrilled to announce we’ve launched another big update to the app (to version 1.6.9), which introduces:

  • Massively-expanded support for touch gesture control
  • Refined UI and much improved brush management
  • A new Export persona, allowing instant export of multiple slices and layers
  • Many performance and other improvements

If you already own the app, you can download the updated version free of charge from the App Store now. Because we have made various changes to the UI and gestures we’d definitely recommend you check out our all-new set of tutorials which you can find here.

Essential Apple Podcast 104: Curse you 9 to 5 Mac!

This week I am joined by regular co-host Donny Yankellow to yet again try and avoid all the rumours and leakers as we approach the big event. But of course no one can have missed the 9to5 Mac “scoop” that has revealed at least two iPhones and the look of the new Apple watch. With speculation rife we try to find some other stories to talk about. A shorter than usual show unsurprisingly as we all await the big reveals (and hope 9 to 5 Mac haven’t ruined all the fun).

Essential Apple Podcast 102: It goes through a LOT of cheese!

This week I am joined once again by Mark. We do our best to avoid all the rumours and speculation about the upcoming (yet to be officially announced) Apple autumn event and exactly what hardware etc will be released to focus on “actual stories” but somehow we end up at Business Insider and Mark loses his cool over one of their stories…

Thoughts and concerns about Apple: An opinion by James Ormiston (@MacJim)

I’d like to begin by saying the following are purely my personal thoughts (and worries) about Apple and where we are heading with them. I have no insider knowledge, or any other connections to Apple. Since Steve Jobs died, there’s been a lot of speculation and rumour, with many saying Apple is doomed and will not survive without him at the helm, but so far, these have proven untrue. That doesn’t mean there’s no reason for us fanboys/fangirls to be worried about the future of Apple.

For some time now, I’ve been saying that macOS and iOS will become one and will be the  only Apple provided OS for their computing devices. But, I hear you saying, Apple has categorically said they will not do this and have even made this clear with a big “NO.” being shown at the last keynote. However, I have to say look back at the things Apple have said they wouldn’t do, but did anyway. And now we see iOS apps will be coming to Mojave.

The Growth of Mobile Gaming – an infographic provided by MrGamez.com

Mobile gaming is growing at a rate of knots. Every day consumers continue to download games to their phones, with millions of people across the globe experiencing the thrill of gaming on their smartphones. Let’s take a look at the numbers behind the rise of mobile gaming.

As growth in mobile device ownership balloons, so does the rise in smartphone and tablet gaming. In fact, mobile devices are now being deemed as the top consumer gaming platform, defeating even the PC and dedicated consoles.

In research conducted between 2014 and 2017, growth in the number of users for smartphones sky-rocketed compared to the stable usage of PCs and consoles combined. Growth in revenue for mobile devices rose from $25 billion to $45 billion in 2017.

Mobile gaming also opened up an avenue for female gamers to explore. A gamer study in 2017, as featured in this infographic, showed an almost equal mobile gaming usage of female and male players. In fact, in North America with 146 million mobile gamers, 48% were reported to be female gamers versus 52% male players.

With the unveiling of new mobile technologies (i.e. virtual reality), there’s no doubt that mobile gaming will continue to flourish. To examine the rise in mobile gaming, check out the detailed infographic by MrGamez…

Essential Apple Podcast 98: Warren buys all the things!

On this weeks Essential Apple Podcast Donny Yankellow (@rtteachr) and Warren Sklar (from the Mac to the Future Go Livecast) to discuss the news. We had an i9 “disaster” that wasn’t, and rumours that the T2 may be causing issues. But we think that was old news and a “storm in a teacup” and so we wander off into a variety of far more interesting things. Like the sales spike in Apple Watches, FitBark Dog Activity Trackers, Verizon’s VPN, and the AnyFont App for iOS.
