Essential Apple Podcast 163: A Decade of iPad

This week Nick and Jim join me as we ponder a decade of iPad, gasp at Apple’s awe inspiring revenues, consider whether Jony jumped ship or got pushed overboard, wonder if subscriptions are a viable long term business strategy and talk about whether or not the EU should demand everyone uses the same charge cable… Plus new listener feedback and don’t forget there is still time to put your name in the hat to win a year’s subscription to FotoMagico for iPad.

Bye bye Jony

A personal opinion by @MacJim

The following words are my own and do not represent the opinion of Essential Apple; these are my own thoughts on the announcement of Jony Ive’s departure from Apple. In saying that, he isn’t fully away from Apple as he will still be creating products for them, not as the chief designer but as an independent one at this own design studio, LoveFrom. Also I want to put to bed the suggestion that Apple is doomed, we had all that when Steve Jobs died in 2011. Apple is clearly still here and financially very sound, but…

Yes, the but… Apple has always been an expensive world to enter and stay with and its more so now where you are paying around £1,000 over the odds for a MacBook Pro. From the early days, starting with the $666.66 Apple I, it set a high price of entry into this world, and this continues even today (I’ll skip the history lesson as most will know about the highs and lows) now there is the even higher cost ecosphere that is Apple. Suffice to say they are still firing with all cylinders. So, why has Jony decided to leave a company he help to save from bankruptcy, one that let him do his best work making him a very wealthy man?

Essential Apple Podcast 141: The Jony Ive Exit Strategy Edition

This week the iOS 13 and Catalina Public Betas launched – Simon (of course) ignored good sense and went headlong into them, consequences be damned and it promptly bit him in the arse! Apple bought a self driving car company on the edge of collapse we wonder what that may mean? They also hired a top ARM chip architect – some are saying this means ARM Macs sooner rather than later. Nick and Donny are not convinced, and nor is Simon. Of course we have to take a look at Sir Jony announcing his departure from Apple and we discuss what we think about that too!

Essential Apple Podcast 133: The Donkey… Ehh, he was not pleased

Well what the actual hell? I take a week off and the internet goes berserk! Apple and Qualcomm settle, Intel drop 5G modems, Samsung Fold review units are a bust (literally), Samsung “delay” its launch as a result. Jony gives an interview and says he lives in the future, Tim Cook says he believes in doing the right thing, Apple get into a row about ‘screen time’ apps, plus buckets more stuff happened. I am joined by Nick (@spligosh) Riley to take a gander at some of it… (and apologies to Bill Bailey for stealing his line from the Pubbe Gagge)

Essential Apple Podcast 67: What the Hell Patreon?

We are now well into December, there is even snow here in Suffolk today so Christmas is “officially sanctioned” and still Mark refrains from breaking out the Quo… Also Patreon did some sort of U turn and say if you aren’t receiving “life changing” amounts of donations they don’t really want your business… Plus Apple TV, SSDs, ARM laptops and more.
