Rumour: Apple plans to ditch 3.5mm port next iPhone on iPhone 7. Lightning for wired headphones

Its traditionaly another quiet spot in the year for Apple so the rumour mills have to crank even harder for stories. According to reports Apple is looking to make the next iPhone even slimmer by ditching the 3.5mm audio jack.

The website macotakara.jp cites one of those “reliable sources” who claim to know that Apple is looking to make the iPhone 7 at least 1mm thinner by going lightning only.

Lightning connectors on headphones aren’t new but nor are they readily available. A quick search on the Amazon store shows these 2 offerings.  If you know of more please let us know.

Supplied Ear Pods will equip a Lightning connector, which means a DA (Digital to Analog) converter is required. The DA will be built in the Lightning connector without sacrificing the size, according to the source.

DA convertors aren’t normally the smallest of things so unless Apple has some handy new hardware it would be hard to see them going with a chunky connector just to use lightning only.

Theres also the charging issue, what about listening to your device whilst it’s charging? I suppose the fruity company does have some demographics along the lines of stuff listened to whilst plugged in = (insert figure)

One way around this would be to use Bluetooth headphones for which I can recommend the Bluedio M2 Stereo Bluetooth Wireless headphones. They might be cheap but they have been the best set of wireless headphones I’ve used beating the bigger and much more expensive brands.

Lightning connector headphones are thin on the ground. After a bit of searching I managed to find these two And after spending some considerable time searching I also found a couple of reviews.

Back in September 2014 Philips just beat Apple with first Lightning headphones in a Verge Article, in January 2015 9to5 went hands on with Harman’s JBL Reflect Aware headphones and then TechRadar gave us their Philips Fidelio M2L review which garnered a 4.5 out of 5.

If Apple were going to make the move to the lightning connector I would have thought by now that there beats headphones lineup would at least feature one set of lightning only headphones. Although I imagine that if they did it would cause uproar on the Internet and start the rumour mills going into overdrive.

Anyways remember to take all of this with a pinch of salt as we are barely out of the door with the new iPhone 6S But I don’t think that’s going to stop the rumour sites doing their thing.
