Essential Apple Podcast Bonus: Photo organisation app Mylio, with David Vaskevitch

Simon talks to David Vaskevitch (ex Microsolft CTO and CEO of photo app Mylio) – the audio has the whole of the recording, the video starts when David wants to share his screen (yeah I wasn’t totally on the ball with that but there you are). You can find the video on YouTube

A new study estimates that people will snap upwards of 1.4 trillion photos in 2021. And with record numbers of people embarking on summer travel right now, the need for a reliable photo organization tool is more important than ever.

Visionary software architect, former Microsoft chief technical officer, and current CEO of the photo app Mylio, David Vaskevitch, would love to talk with you about the best option for storing and organizing all of those photos, so that you have access to them all the time, on all your devices, in a private and safe way. David can address:

  • How to store your photos in low-cost a way where you keep ownership of them and in total privacy
  • How technology can help you to organize all your photos so you can retrieve them easily. Methods include tagging, organizing the photos by year taken, or placing them on a digital map of the globe so you can retrieve them by location.
  • How you can have all your photos (and David means ALL your photos – over your lifetime) available to you on all your devices, at any time, even without internet connection
  • Why you should strongly consider taking your photos off the cloud, and how to do so efficiently.

If accessibility, privacy and control over your photos and videos is important to you, Mylio is the perfect solution. Learn how Mylio makes it easy to organize, manage, and protect your visual life story the right way. You can try out Mylio for free, just download the app.

How to Connect a ps5 Controller With iPhone, iPad and Mac

Wether you’re into Apple Arcade or fancy going for some proper AAA gaming you’re going to need a controller. In this video we cover how to pair and use your PS5 DualSense controller to your iPad, iPhone or your Mac.

To pair your controller

  1. On your PS5 controller press and hold the playstation button and the share button (its the one of the top left hand side)
  2. Wait till the Playstation 5 controller starts pulsing blue then it’s ready for pairing.
  3. On your iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5, open Settings
  4. Tap on Bluetooth
  5. If all goes well you will see your controller on the bluetooth screen.  Click connect and viola.

Now it’s worth mentioning that the majority of games will see your PS5 controller but show Xbox controller buttons. This is due to developers following the reference guides for MFI controllers.

Basically this means that A is X
B is circle
Square is X and
Triangle is Y.

Also you won’t get the full use of your your £60 playstation controller.  Motion controls, touch pad, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback don’t work at all and it’s unclear if any developers can and will use these features in the future.

LumaFusion running on 13″ Apple MacBook Pro M1

As a long time user of Lumafusion for our YouTube channel this has been a video I’ve been waiting for.  What’s it like to run LumaFusion for iPad / iPhone on a MacBook Pro.  I had expected a dramatic increase in render time but it seems to match the latest iPad Pro which sort of makes sense…

WWDC 2020 Apple CarKey, Is your Phone or Watch Compatible?

Apple CarKey became official at WWDC 2020 but the list of devices compatible might surprise you. The Apple Watch Series 4 is near identical to the Series 5 but omit’s CarKey features. Watch on (pardon the pun) to see what devices are compatible with Apple CarKey.

Fingers crossed that Tesla will support Apple CarKey someday.

How to Level Your Audio for a Better Sounding Podcast

If you are new the the world of podcasting or looking to record audio for a Youtube review and don’t quite understand compressors, equalisers and how to get your audio levels to sound the same there’s good news in the form of Levelator.

Normalise your audio the easy way with Levelator.

Having laid dormant as of the end of 2012, the Levelator program was abandoned apart from an update to get it working with El Capitan. Rather than try to explain what Levelator does here’s the blurb from the website.

So what is The Levelator®? It’s software that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations from one speaker to the next, for example. It’s not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three. It’s much more than those tools, and it’s much simpler to use. The UI is dirt-simple: Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler’s application window, and a few moments later you’ll find a new version which just sounds better.

You Can Now Use Your Canon Camera as a Webcam on Your Mac

Wondering how to use your Canon camera as a webcam on your Mac? Good news, Canon have released their EOS Webcam Utility Beta software for the Mac.

Not every Canon camera will work but there is a compatibility list and with the software being in the beta stages it’s likely more will be added. Be warned tho this is beta software and from my experience, could cause system instability. Also be warned that to install the Canon utility you will have to reboot your Mac,

Video resolutions are limited and during my limited testing time I couldn’t get anywhere near 30fps yet the image looks more than passable during a quick setup and test review.

You can now download the EOS Webcam Utility Beta software directly from Canon and be sure to read the release notes.

How to stabilise your iPhone or iPad video

If you’re looking to up your video game and remove some of the bounce / stabilise your video footage, we’ve taken a look at Emulsio for iOS. We look at how well it performs and if you even need it with a newer Apple device with in built image optical stabilisation.

Emulsio is available on the App Store for free but does require an in app purchase for some features. The video stabilised in my youtube review was done with the free version.
