Adobe has always chewed up processing power on my Macbook and sucked the power out of the battery more than watching a dvd (right click on a flash video to reduce cpu and power consumption) and today we hear that Adobe will stop developing for Android and Rim’s playbook.
This will potentially hit Blackberry harder than most as their advertising campaign centres around the “weakness” of the iPad not supporting flash. Android users lord it up over iPhone users because of this one feature but, really, is flash needed?
The BBC for me lead the way in video streaming enabling it on all my mac devices with no problems. The recent iPlayer application shows what can be accomplished without the need for flash. With cloud computing being touted for everything, why not take transcoding to the cloud and let us have video’s powered in the HTML 5 format?
My flash usage is limited to watching video’s and hitting up a few fun game websites every now and again but video streaming is where it’s at for me.
Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.
