Abrams told the magazine’s Ian Parker that lightsaber design in the film “would reflect those thoughts”.

But Ive says he didn’t come up with the idea for the lightsaber cross guards featured in the first trailer for the flick, instead suggesting the Jedi weapon be

“less precise, and just a little bit more spitty” to make them “more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.”
