Apple watch adoption continues as do high-profile applications for the device and those now seeping into the hardware side as well.
The UK’s British airways has seen so many people using Apple watch for boarding passes they are installing wrist friendly ticket scanners at Heathrow.
According to the report British Airways has seen the use of Apple watch app increase 386% in just four months between June and October.
A lot of time scanners don’t leave enough room to slide a wrist under, they are built for thinner things like a smart phone or a sheet of paper.
A total of 136 new scan and go devices will be able to accommodate a passenger’s wrist at Heathrow’s terminal three and terminal five the scanners will be active as of 15 December.
Don’t get me wrong here, installing these new readers is nothing but a good thing but speaking from experience the number of airlines that support Passbook / Wallet hasn’t shown any significant signs of growing.
I’ve used Passbook / Wallet once to fly from Birmingham to Munich and not having to faff around with printing boarding passes, or being charged for not printing out a pass, makes travel a lot easier. Just remember to make sure your devices are fully charged before setting off.
Let’s hope more regional airports are starting to take notice of the smart phone trend and support the service and then more carriers may support digital boarding passes.
